Helping Young Man Chase Sporting Dream

Ultimately this has meant that he has very limited movement in right foot and ankle. As you can imagine, having a right leg that is 2cm short and an ankle and foot that don’t move much has had an effect on his hips and spine as well. As such, despite his youth, he has had recurring joint and muscle problems in his legs and spine. Despite this, Steve has attempted to stay fit doing the activities that he can do. Part of this had been to do Olympic-type weight lifting at the gym. Due to the inherent imbalance in his joints and muscles from the short leg and foot, the gym was potentially doing him more harm than good. So he had recurring low back pain, and other joint and muscle problems.

Then, in August of 2014 Steve presented to me on referral from his sister, for treatment related to his most recent bout of low back pain, which he had suffered with for over 18 months. I knew that I could help Steve, but that the results would likely be temporary. I also knew that Steve was not realising his full potential regarding his physical fitness, and that he need not continue to suffer with chronic joint and muscle pain.

Just a few weeks of Chiropractic care resulted in significant improvement in Steve’s symptoms, and he even had an increase in the size of his lower leg muscles

by 1.5cm! However, I knew that his symptoms were likely to return unless his faulty lower leg biomechanics were corrected and balanced. So I referred him to Dr Cherye Roche for a Biomechanical assessment and gait analysis using the GaitScan pressure plate system.

Sports Chiropractic : A Drug Free Approach To Injury Care & Performance Enhancement

Dr. Cherye Roche, Clinical Director at Pure Healthcare NZ, and member of the NZCA Sports Council explains: “Athletes appreciate that Chiropractic is an excellent addition to drug free injury management, and peak performance. This is especially true with regard to neuro-musculoskeletal problems in the spine and extremities.” A recent New Zealand study suggests an improvement in proprioception of arm movements after subjects receive a Chiropractic adjustment to the cervical spine[1]. This can enhance performance in sports such as cricket or squash where awareness and control of the bat or racket are critical. Another benefit being researched is enhancement and proper functioning of core abdominal muscles, which are also vital for sports performance2.
