Hi, I’m Dr. Jason Berry a chiropractor at Pure Healthcare, with a special interest in working with athletes to not only treat sports injuries but to improve sports performance. In my years of working with athletes at various levels one of the most common injuries seen would have to be Ilio-tibial band (ITB) syndrome, which is generally characterised by pain down the outside of one or both legs, between the hip and the knee.
Firstly at bit anatomy, the ITB is essentially an extension of the Tensor Fasciae Lata muscle, which attaches from the crest of the ilium to the outside of the knee, and functions to control hip movement and stabilise the outside of the knee.
Sports injuries are injuries that typically occur while participating in organized sports, competitions, training sessions, or organized fitness activities. These injuries may occur for a variety of reasons, including improper training, lack of appropriate footwear or safety equipment.
The injuries are of two general types. The first type is called an acute traumatic injury. These injuries usually involve a single blow from a single application of force, like getting a cross-body block in football. The second type of sports injury is called an overuse or chronic injury. Chronic injuries are those that happen over a period of time. Chronic injuries are usually the result of repetitive training, such as running, overhand throwing, or serving a ball in tennis.
It’s not surprising that runners get confused about what type of massage would benefit them most. Depending on where you look, there are over 30 different types of massage identified on the internet. Of course, some of these styles are obviously not specifically beneficial to athletes, but runners can go beyond the typical “sports massage” to get results.
