What she found was that, not only did Steve have an “anatomical” short leg on the right, he also had a “functional” long leg on the left. So this was making it appear that his leg length inequality was worse than it actually is. Dr Cherye provided Steve with custom orthotics to control his abnormal foot motion and reduce the functional leg length inequality. She also gave him a lift under his right short leg to balance the anatomical difference. This combination evened out his leg length,
which allowed him to walk in a more balanced way and decreased the stress in his pelvis and spine. Steve’s response to all of this this was to say “…It was the first time in my life that my right heel was touching the floor.
When I was walking it felt so different that I wanted to cry with happiness. The orthotics were a bit uncomfortable at the beginning, but eventually there were no problems with wearing them. Since receiving custom orthotics, and a bit of chiropractor care, my back has finally returned to normal.”
Now Steve was ready for “Active Recovery” to get him stronger and more fit, so he could participate in sport as he wanted to. Specifically, he is a hockey goalie and aspired to race triathlons. So, I sent Steve to see the team at Epic Fitness.
Carlyle Van Rensburg – director of Epic Fitness, Albany shares his experience with Steve as follows:
Our professional relationship with the Chiropractic doctors at Pure Healthcare gave them the confidence to refer Steve to our Active Recovery® programme. We assessed his movement competency, and then designed a custom programme to balance and strengthen his movement patterns, flexibility and muscle activity. At Epic we ensure success through our simple principles:
Training Smarter, Train Different and that Movement Matters. These things were all important to get Steve to where he wanted to be.
On initial assessment, Steve had severely compromised coordination, balance and agility which created compensatory movement patterns that needed to be corrected. With his strong mind set, and the support of the Chiropractic care he was receiving from Dr. Colin, we knew we could provide an Epic result. We have helped him to improve his strength, stability, agility and coordination. How do we know? We measure, track and report the outcomes for our clients. Here of some of
Steve’s phenomenal results:
On initial testing, on 9 October 2014, Steve could only manage 5 lunges on each leg, 10 squats and his cycling 3km time trial took 4:52. Only 6 weeks later his warm up includes the things included in the initial testing, followed by explosive and unilateral movements. And his time trial has drastically improved to 3:19. These results have created the confidence, determination and drive in Steve to not only get him back on the hockey field but set his goals on competing in an Ironman. Steve describes his experience as follows; “I started working out at Epic where they gave me a programme that is specific in correct form to build my muscles and strength back up. At first I wasn’t allowed to run so I began to cycle, but by working with Carlyle and Lauren at Epic, I was able to start feeling confident in my weaker leg. I don’t even notice it now…”
Carlyle explains further that, Steve’s training is comprised of simple, safe and functional movements, ensuring a strong foundation, resulting in consistent progression and improvement. Epic’s Active Recovery® programme is critical in any recovery process and a perfect follow on to any rehabilitation treatment for a wide variety of clients. Steve’s story is an example of how we can work with anyone, at any fitness level to improve their health and wellbeing through smart training.
A final comment from Steve:
“I owe a big thank you to the Chiropractors at Pure Healthcare for helping me with my back/foot problems, and to Carlyle and Lauren at Epic fitness for making me feel comfortable with my balance, walking and overall strength in myself.”
